Lawmakers scramble to avoid government shutdown this week
The clock is ticking as lawmakers on Capitol Hill scramble to avoid a government shutdown later this week and prevent the U.S. from defaulting on its debt next month. On Monday, Republican senators blocked a bill to suspend the debt ceiling and keep the government operating past Thursday.
