More homes fall into ocean along North Carolina’s Outer Banks
Several more North Carolina homes have collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean, and more could collapse in the coming days, according to the National Park Service. Five unoccupied homes in the Outer Banks fell into the sea on Tuesday afternoon amid rough surf, officials said. The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands stretching the coast of North Carolina, featuring more than 100 miles of shoreline. The picturesque seaside communities are known for their beach homes propped on high stilts. But more than two dozen privately-owned homes along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore have collapsed into the Atlantic since 2020 — 16 of them since Sept. 16 of this year.
